Gardening for Kids

If you as an adult enjoy gardening and playing in the dirt with your tools, it only makes sense that you'd want to get your kids involved in your gardening!

The truth of the matter is that children can get a lot out of learning to garden with their parents and gardening for children is great if you are looking for a great way to spend time with your children. If you are considering spending this next growing season showing your children the ropes when it comes to plants, keep a few things in mind.

Get started early. You don't have to wait until the seeds are ready to be planted. When its starting to warm up, introduce your children to the gardening tools, cautioning them that things like shovels and hoes are very large and heavy and could hurt them if they aren't careful. If possible, see if you can find them one that is smaller and more sized to fit their hands, or simply outfit them with a trowel to get them started. This is a good way to introduce them to soil. Tell them all about fertilizers and what they need to know to make sure that the soil is healthy and nutritious when it comes to feeding your plants.

When you are working on gardening for kids, you'll find that you have lots of room to teach them about nature. For instance, you'll find that you can do a great deal to introduce them to composting. If you already have a compost heap, talk about what it will do when you spread the compost on the waiting soil. Similarly, if you have a vegetable garden, tell them how the remnants of food from your dinners can go back into the soil and make it more healthy. Introduce them to the gardening tools that you will use to turn compost.

You can let your kids choose what kind of plants and vegetables that they are going to help grow in the coming year. Let them know that not all plants will do well in your area and let them pick ones that will. You can talk to them about what gardening tools which plants will need and you can get them to help out during small tasks like getting the soil prepared and planting the seeds or seedlings. If you are starting out from seeds that you are going to get to germinate inside, get them to help you with that as well.

You can teach your children a great deal when it comes to gardening, so make sure that you take this great opportunity to let them learn and to do some growing themselves!
