Company Picnic Game Ideas Part 1
I am great at coming up with games. The logistics involved in organizing a corporate event, be it a company picnic picnic, are significant enough, but if you’re into games you have to have someone who can run them or you’re going to look silly.
I have always been the right person and I’ve written these articles to help you with your planning if that person at your company happens to be you. No matter what sort of event it is, planning the company picnic game is an important part of the event’s logistics and must be run right or you’ll come off looking poorly.
Remember that games do not appeal to everyone. A lot of companies these days incorporate games into their events for educational purposes, for development of camaraderie in a department or company, or simply for fun. However, there are those who are leery of games because they fear embarrassment. If you fail to run your games well, this can be even worse.
It may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you are thinking in terms of risk management for an event, but games that fail can cause an entire event to be seen as a flop, regardless of how well the rest of the event goes. The person in charge of games will be blamed for bad experiences with them, even to the extent of being made to feel as if they alone are responsible for the event being less than successful.
Who Should Be Running The Games At Your Corporate Event?
Whoever is chosen to be in charge of games at an event should possess these characteristics:
• They must be a born organizer
• They have to love fun (and as we all know, enthusiasm is contagious)
• They must know the difference between fun and humiliation
• They must keep peoples physical limitations in mind (to avoid injuries)
• They have to know how to access appropriate resources
What Sort Of Games Should You Have?
The old standbys are good choices for these events. While there is nothing wrong with innovation, traditional games have several advantages which can keep things running smoothly at your event:
• They are immediately familiar to everyone and non-threatening
• Very little is required in terms of explanation, which prevents confusion
• It is easy to recruit assistance for setup since participants understand the game
• Any risks inherent in the game are well known and can be easily minimized
Again, there is nothing at all wrong with trying something different – but any such games should be especially well planned and tested by the organizer.
What Do I Mean By Traditional Games?
These would be the old picnic and party favorites such as tug o’ war, softball, sack races and egg and spoon races, putting contests.
Remember that you can liven up these perennial favorites by adding your own spin on these games.
For instance, the eggs in an egg and spoon race could be replaced by used golf balls and turned into a relay race, with only one ball per team – and this ball must be passed spoon to spoon without using hands. There is a good reason for using golf balls rather than eggs. Unlike eggs, golf balls need not be cooked and are far more durable, as well as being cost-effective.
A more in-depth discussion of some of the traditional games and the equipment needed will be forthcoming in another article.
Preparing games for your corporate event is just as important as any other aspect of preparations for such an event. Properly done, it can ensure that the event is perceived to be a success and something that will be looked forward to by employees in the future.
