When we think of picnics what do you think of?
A nice day out and about with the ones you love. Perhaps a few sandwiches are involved, perhaps some fresh bread, coffee or tea, or even wine and Kool-Aid for the little ones. Load up a basket of goodies and off the family goes for a day in the fresh air—right? It would seem so; at the same time, that is not always the case. If you take a moment or so to ask people you will find that everybody has different picnic ideas and does picnic outings differently.
What do you call a picnic? What you would call a 'picnic,' others may call by another name. Really it depends on the food of choice and the set-up. A clam bake, a weenie roast, a cook out, a fishy fry, a barbecue. The food that you make can affect the way the picnic goes and the name it is called by.
What makes a great family picnic fun for you and your loved ones? It depends; consider your personality, your interests, the personalities of those you would take with you on an excursion. Do you like to hike or backpack with your friends or are leisurely walks good enough? The answer to that question may affect the type of picnic ideas you have.
Put Thought Into Picnic Recreation
The main idea behind a picnic is to eat, but that is not all you do. Recreation is important. Games, a hike, a mountain climb, a nature walk, a swim—whatever it is, make sure that it is something that everyone can enjoy. If you are inviting small children to your picnic, a mountain climb obviously won't do. If it is a bunch of college buddies, something like that may be more appropriate.
But even with college buddies (some would say particularly with college buddies) you need to plan properly and take proper precautions. Maps, compass, First Aid kit, packs, water, tell someone where you are going etc.
Think ahead a little about transport of the food. If your going on a walk you don't want to be carrying a picnic basket. So don't go so far way from the car that it's too far to put away before you walk. Or you could take a picnic backpack, which would be much easier to carry.
Location, Location, Location
With that said, the location and your companionship has a lot to do with the picnic—even more so than perhaps the food alone. Picnics can even be had in your yard or just on a balcony—so long as it is in or near fresh air, you can call it what you want to call it.
Consider these picnic ideas. For those who would rather not leave home, there are many creative ways to have a picnic at home that you may want to explore. A back yard or even a balcony do very well, but if you don't have that much, some furniture pushed into a corner and a bare floor and a picnic blanket will also work well. Open the window for some fresh air, or play some nature sounds!
The rooftop is another spot for a picnic, albeit a romantic one. A hilltop is noted for this romanticism as well. If you want to take the kids along, historic locations are great, as are architectural locations where the little ones can explore and learn something new.
Playing Picnic Games is a Must
Whether you are having a picnic in the park or faking a picnic in the living room, games are very important. Having fun is part of the element of having a picnic, along with the bugs of course. Cricket, carpet bowls, soccer, football, catch, three legged races—these are the types of picnic games that people love. All you have to do is snatch up a few balls on the way out, and you can have a full blown game before too long!
No matter what you do, what you eat, and where you go, picnics can be a ball if you have the right people. The organization part is something else altogether!
